Lake Garda’s Hidden Gem: Riva

Tucked right up at the northern tip of Lake Garda, Riva del Garda is one of those places that feels like it’s showing off — but effortlessly.

Mountains rise straight out of the water, pastel buildings line the harbour, and life ticks along at that very Italian pace where lunch lasts longer than planned and sunsets come with a spritz.

Riva is where lake meets mountain, relaxation meets adventure, and history meets seriously good food. Whether you’re here to chill by the water, get active outdoors or simply soak up the atmosphere, Riva del Garda quietly nails it.

Holiday Hack Sheet

Getting to Riva del Garda is refreshingly straightforward. Fly into Verona Airport, with direct UK flights taking around two hours. easyJet, Jet2, and TUI all offer great routes depending on where you’re flying from. From Verona, it’s roughly an hour’s drive north — and trust us, the scenery on the way is part of the fun.

If you prefer public transport, trains run to Desenzano or Peschiera del Garda, where you can hop on a bus or ferry straight up the lake to Riva. It’s smooth, scenic and surprisingly stress-free.

The best time to visit? May, June and September are sweet spots — warm days, fewer crowds, and ideal conditions for exploring both the lake and the mountains.

For the easiest experience, we recommend booking with a trusted provider that bundles flights, hotels and transfers together. Less planning, more lake time.

Historic Harbour Town Vibes

Riva’s Old Town is pure Italian postcard material. Cobbled streets weave between medieval towers, colourful buildings and lively piazzas, all opening out onto a buzzy waterfront lined with cafés and restaurants.

At the heart of it all sits Rocca di Riva, a medieval fortress surrounded by water that now houses the MAG Museum. Inside, you’ll find everything from prehistoric artefacts to Renaissance art — but even if museums aren’t your thing, the building itself is worth the visit.

For the best view in town, take the funicular up to the Bastion Tower. Built in the 16th century as a lookout point, it now delivers panoramic views over the lake, rooftops and mountains. It’s especially magical at golden hour.

Back down by the harbour, evenings roll in gently. Bars fill up, conversations spill onto terraces, and dinner tends to stretch longer than expected. This is Riva at its best — relaxed, social and very easy to fall into.

Pebbly Beaches & Clear Water Dips

Riva has some of the best beaches on the northern end of Lake Garda — and they’re big on space, scenery and comfort.

Spiaggia Sabbioni and Pini Beach run along the promenade just outside town. They’re a mix of pebbles and grassy lawns, with cafés, playgrounds, floating swimming platforms, sun loungers and showers. Perfect for lazy lake days with minimal effort.

The water here is famously clear, thanks to fresh mountain inflows and restrictions on motorboats. For an extra-refreshing dip, head towards the Sarca River inlet between Riva and Torbole — it’s some of the cleanest water in the lake.

Fancy mixing it up? Walk or cycle along the promenade to Torbole, where beaches like Al Cor and Lido Blu add a more sporty vibe, with excellent facilities and a front-row seat to the watersports action.

World-Class Watersports & Outdoor Fun

Riva del Garda is a dream for active travellers. The reliable breezes that sweep across the lake make it one of Europe’s top spots for windsurfing and sailing, with plenty of schools offering lessons if you’re new.

Prefer dry land? You’re spoiled for choice. The lakeside path to Torbole is perfect for an easy stroll, while the Ponale Trail winds through old tunnels and cliffs towards waterfalls and viewpoints that feel wildly dramatic.

Cyclists can hire e-bikes to cruise out to nearby Lake Ledro, or take a bus uphill and enjoy a mostly downhill ride back through vineyards and olive groves. There’s also rock climbing, mountain biking and guided walks straight from town.

Flavours of Lake Garda

Riva knows how to eat — and it does it well. Expect menus filled with risottos, fresh pasta, polenta and lake-caught sardines, alongside excellent pizzas and local wines.

Traditional trattorias sit alongside modern lakefront restaurants, all offering that unbeatable combination of good food and better views. Lunches are long, dinners are leisurely, and dessert is never skipped.

Out and About

There’s plenty to fill your days in Riva, whether you plan it or not. Take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenades, where the water shimmers and cafés invite you to pause with a coffee or gelato. On warmer days, the clear lake is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, or you can hop on a boat trip across Lake Garda to explore the surrounding towns from the water.

If you’re feeling adventurous, sailing and windsurfing are a must — the consistent breezes make the lake ideal for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts. Inland, you can enjoy guided mountain walks, discovering hidden trails, dramatic cliffs, and waterfalls that make for picture-perfect stops.

For a more relaxed pace, wander the local markets or settle in at a harbour café, watching the world go by while soaking up the charming atmosphere of this lakeside gem.
