Ryanair is known for its affordable flights across Europe, but their strict hand luggage policies can catch travellers off guard. Understanding these rules and preparing accordingly can save you time, money and stress.
Ryanair’s Hand Luggage Policy
Ryanair allows one small bag on board for free. This bag must fit under the seat in front of you and measure no more than 40cm x 20cm x 25cm. Examples include a small backpack, handbag, or laptop bag. I personally use a small bag for going away for a week to somewhere hot or for a few days’ city break! If you need to bring more, you have two options: Priority & 2 Cabin Bags or purchasing a 10kg Check-in Bag.
- Priority & 2 Cabin Bags: This option lets you bring an additional larger cabin bag (55cm x 40cm x 20cm) that can weigh up to 10kg. This bag will go in the overhead locker. Priority boarding ensures you can bring both bags into the cabin.
- 10kg Check-in Bag: If you don’t want to pay for Priority, you can purchase a 10kg checked bag. This must be dropped off at the airport check-in desk and collected at baggage claim upon arrival.
Tips for Flying with Ryanair
Pack Smart: Stick to a small bag if you want to avoid extra fees. Use packing cubes to maximize space and keep your items organized.
Wear Your Bulkiest Clothes: Save space in your bag by wearing your heaviest and bulkiest clothes on the plane, like jackets and boots.
Use All Available Space: Utilize every inch of your small bag. Fill shoes with socks or small items and roll clothes to save space.
Check Bag Sizes at Home: Measure your bags before heading to the airport to ensure they comply with Ryanair’s dimensions.
Buy Priority Boarding: If you need more space, it’s often cheaper to purchase Priority & 2 Cabin Bags in advance rather than paying for an overweight or oversized bag at the gate.
Be Prepared for Boarding: Keep your boarding pass and passport easily accessible. Ensure your small bag fits under the seat before you board to avoid delays.
Ryanair’s hand luggage rules are strict, but with careful planning, you can navigate them without incurring extra fees. By packing smart, wearing bulky items, and considering additional options like Priority boarding, you can ensure a smooth and budget-friendly flight. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or new to flying with Ryanair, these tips will help you make the most of your journey and not get caught out like I did. Safe travels!
