Nairobi, the bustling capital of Kenya, is a city that combines the thrill of urban life with the beauty of nature. My trip to Nairobi was nothing short of amazing, filled with unique experiences, warm hospitality and breathtaking sights. Here, I’ll share my personal journey and recommendations to help you make the most of your visit to this vibrant city.
Arriving in Nairobi
I arrived in Nairobi via Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), which is well-connected to major cities around the world. The airport was easy to navigate and I had arranged a private transfer to take me to my hotel as this was the best option for me due to flying from Mombasa and arriving very early morning. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are available and convenient for getting around the city.
Where to Stay
Nairobi offers a range of accommodations to fit different budgets and preferences. Check out edreams or expedia for a flight & hotel deal.
Exploring Nairobi
Nairobi is a city with something for everyone. Here are some of my top recommendations based on my experiences:
Nairobi National Park
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Nairobi National Park, a unique wildlife reserve located just a short drive from the city centre.
- Safari Experience: I went on a morning safari and saw lions, giraffes, zebras, and even a rhino! The park’s proximity to the city makes it a convenient spot for a quick wildlife adventure. Nairobi National Park Daily Game drives on Viator
- David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: After the safari, I visited the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an elephant orphanage located within the park. Watching baby elephants being fed and playing in the mud was heartwarming and something that I will never forget! David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Half-Day Tour in Nairobi on Viator
Giraffe Centre
Another must-visit is the Giraffe Centre in Langata. Here, I got the chance to feed and interact with the endangered Rothschild giraffes. Tour to Giraffe Center from Nairobi on Viator
- Close Encounters: Feeding the giraffes was a bucket list experience for myself. The staff are very knowledgeable and shared interesting facts about these gentle giants.
- Nature Trail: There’s also a nature trail where you can take a leisurely walk and enjoy the serene environment.
You can do all 3 of these trips in one day, it will take between 8-9 hours but great if you are rushed for time whilst in Nairobi like I was! The cost is around £90 but so worth it for these experiences! Nairobi National Park, Baby Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Center on Viator. Karen Blixen Museum
As a fan of the movie “Out of Africa,” I was excited to visit the Karen Blixen Museum, located in the former home of the famous author. The museum offers a glimpse into Karen Blixen’s life and the history of the colonial era in Kenya. The house and its surroundings are beautifully preserved. The gardens are a lovely place to stroll and relax, offering a peaceful break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Karen Blixen Nairobi Museum Tour on Viator
Safari Options:
Nairobi is a great base for starting a safari, with plenty of tour operators offering 3-4 day guided Safari tours, this includes pick up and drop off at your hotel. 7 day trips to the Masaai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli are also possible from Nairobi! You can choose a range of options to suit your budget and accommodation preferences. However, I would recommend booking this in advance.

Dining:
I would highly recommend a visit the famous Carnivore restaurant. I had pick up and drop off from a private driver which was lovely to travel around the city and be pointed out the landmarks, especially at night to see a different perspective. The restaurant was stunning, and the food was some of the best I have ever tasted, if you like to try new things this is the place for you! Barbecue Dinner At The Carnivore Restaurant on Viator
Practical Tips for Your Trip
Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Nairobi is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to February. The weather is pleasant and ideal for outdoor activities. I visited in late October and the weather was lovely, however may need a light jacket early morning/late at night!
Currency: The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). It’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases and tips, but credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants.
Health Precautions: Make sure to get the necessary vaccinations and take precautions against malaria. Using insect repellent and mosquito nets if doing a safari is advisable.
Local Etiquette: Kenyans are very friendly and polite. A simple greeting like “Jambo” (hello in Swahili) goes a long way. Dress modestly, especially when visiting cultural sites.
Safety: Nairobi is generally safe for tourists, but it’s important to stay vigilant. Avoid walking alone at night and keep an eye on your belongings. Please be aware that a lot of hotels/shopping centres do have security scanners for you to go through on entry and vehicles will be checked when entering.
Guides: All your trips booked should include your own private driver/guide. If there is anything you need, just ask them! They are incredibly helpful and will go out of their way to make sure they can assist you.
Nairobi is a city that offers a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. From the excitement of a safari in Nairobi National Park to seeing baby elephants and feeding giraffes, my journey to Nairobi was filled with unforgettable moments. Whether you’re a nature lover, history lover or simply looking to explore a new city, Nairobi has something to offer.
