Kournas Donkey Walk

Things To Do:

Donkey Walking in Kournas Village
A visit to Kournas Village is a must, and what better way to explore than by walking with some adorable donkeys? And yes, you can lead a donkey through the rustic, beautiful trails of the village. It’s the kind of quirky adventure you never knew you needed! For more info on donkey walking, check out their website – Mandali Kournas. Kournas is just a short 15-minute drive from Georgioupolis, and it’s home to Lake Kournas, the only freshwater lake in Crete. It’s a peaceful spot perfect for a stroll along the water or taking a pedalo out for a spin to see the turtles.

Chania Old Town
While Georgioupolis is peaceful, a trip to the nearby Chania Old Town is essential for anyone looking to experience Venetian architecture, winding streets and some of the best local tavernas. It’s about a 45-minute drive, making for a fantastic day trip. Wander through the narrow alleys, visit the Old Venetian Harbor and grab a coffee at a waterfront café. Chania Old Town Private Tour with pick up on Viator

Elafonisi Beach Day Trip
Elafonisi Beach, about a 90-minute drive from Georgioupolis, is like stepping into paradise. Known for its pink sand and crystal-clear waters, it’s a favourite day trip for beach lovers. The Elafonisi Beach trip makes the journey hassle-free, offering transfers and plenty of time to soak in the scenery. Private Family Tour to Elafonisi Beach & Agia Sofia on Viator

Rethymno and Kournas Lake Tour
For a blend of history and nature, try the all-inclusive half-day tour to Rethymno and Kournas Lake. Wander through Rethymno’s charming old town, with its medieval architecture and Venetian port, then relax by the peaceful shores of Kournas Lake. I would recommend hiring a pedalo at the Lake to see the turtles(in the bushy areas), was definitely the highlight of my day! This trip is a great way to experience two different vibes of Crete in one go! Rethymno & Kournas Lake – Private Tour from Chania on Viator

Walkway out to The Chapel of Agios Nikolaos

Private Tour to Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Peninsula
For those who want to experience Crete’s wild beauty, the private tour to Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Peninsula is a must. It’s a bit of an off-road adventure to reach these secluded spots, but the stunning blue lagoon and rugged landscapes are worth the effort. Chania Private Tour To Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Peninsula on Viator

The Chapel of Agios Nikolaos
This is one of the most iconic spots in Georgioupolis—a tiny whitewashed chapel that sits on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the sea. A stone path leads you from the shore to this charming little church. It’s a bit of a balancing act, especially when the waves crash, but the views and photos make it well worth the wet feet! If your mobility is not great, I would not recommend going over the stones to the chapel as it is very easy to loose your footing. If you visit here on a Sunday, you can light a candle in the chapel and we were also lucky enough to see turtles on the beach here which was a welcome surprise!

Practical Tips for Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: Late spring and early autumn offer the best weather without the summer crowds. May and September are particularly lovely.

Car Hire: While not essential, renting a car makes exploring Crete much easier, especially if you want to visit off-the-beaten-path spots like Balos Lagoon or Elafonisi Beach.

Currency: Greece uses the Euro (€). Carry cash for small purchases, as not all places accept cards.

Tipping: Round up the bill or leave 5–10% at restaurants. Tip taxi drivers and hotel staff modestly.

Language: Greek is spoken, but English is widely understood in tourist areas. Learn a few Greek phrases!

Power outlets: Greece uses Type C and F plugs with 230V. Bring a travel adapter for your devices.

Water: Tap water is generally safe in Crete, but bottled water is recommended for drinking.

Sensible Footwear: If you are going to do some hiking trails or go donkey walking, comfy footwear is a must!

Whether walking donkeys in Kournas Village, exploring the hidden gems of Chania, or basking in the sun at Elafonisi Beach, Georgioupolis is an ideal spot to enjoy the best of Crete. So pack those flip-flops and get ready for a memorable holiday where donkeys, lagoons and chapel-in-the-sea moments await!
