If you’re in Marmaris, Turkey and itching for a quick jaunt to another country, look no further than the beautiful island of Rhodes, Greece. Just a ferry ride away, this day trip promises a perfect blend of history, culture and a whole lot of fun. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your day trip from Marmaris to Rhodes.
Getting There: Smooth Sailing Across the Aegean
First things first – how do you get to Rhodes from Marmaris? Easy peasy! Hop on a catamaran or a ferry from the Marmaris Marina. The journey takes about an hour, giving you just enough time to sip a coffee and enjoy the sea breeze. Ferries typically run in the morning, with returns in the evening, so plan accordingly. Don’t forget your passport – you are crossing an international border, after all!
Top Things to Do and See in Rhodes
Explore the Old Town: Step off the ferry and into the medieval magic of Rhodes Old Town. With its cobblestone streets, ancient walls and charming shops, it’s like stepping into a time machine. Don’t miss the Palace of the Grand Master – it’s as grand as it sounds!
Mandraki Harbor: Legend has it, this is where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood. Today, you’ll find charming deer statues and a beautiful harbour filled with yachts that will make you consider a career change to a billionaire!
Street of the Knights: Feel like a knight in shining armour as you stroll down this well-preserved medieval street. It’s lined with old inns that housed the knights of the Order of St. John. Perfect for an Instagram shot – or twenty.
Beach Break at Elli Beach: If all the sightseeing has worn you out, head to Elli Beach for a refreshing swim. The crystal-clear waters and vibrant beach bars will have you feeling like a Greek god or goddess in no time.
Acropolis: For a taste of history, visit the Temple of Apollo, Temple of Artemis ruins, the stadium and amphitheatre.
Savor Greek Delicacies: Greek food is a feast for the senses. Try some local delicacies like moussaka, souvlaki or my personal favourite, gyros. And don’t forget to wash it all down with some ouzo or a glass of Greek wine.

Pro Tips for a Fantastic Day Trip
- Currency: Greece uses the Euro, so make sure to exchange some currency before you go. Most places do accept credit cards, but it’s always good to have some cash on hand, especially for the little shops.
- Language: While Greek is the official language, you’ll find that many locals speak English, especially in tourist areas. However, learning a few basic phrases can earn you some brownie points with the locals.
- Comfortable Shoes: The streets of Rhodes are beautiful but can be a bit uneven. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes for all the walking you’ll be doing, I learnt this the hard way!
- Sun Protection: The Mediterranean sun is no joke. Pack suncream, a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the rays.
- Timing: Make sure you keep an eye on the time! Missing your ferry back to Marmaris could turn your day trip into an unplanned overnight adventure. Be aware that you need to be back at the ferry 45 minutes before departure to get through passport control!
- Hop on Hop off Bus: Doing the day trip, you will get around 6 hours to explore Rhodes. Although some areas are in walking distance, there are parts you may want to see that are not, such as the panoramic viewpoint and the ancient stadium. Using the hop on hop off bus is a great way to see the main attractions, taking about an hour if you don’t get off at any stops! There is a stop right outside the harbour for convenience, it costs €15 for adults & €7 for children(2024).

A day trip from Marmaris to Rhodes is like taking a mini holiday within your holiday. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie or just someone who loves a good beach day, Rhodes has something for everyone. Plus, the novelty of hopping from one country to another makes it an adventure to remember!
