Tossa de Mar: Costa Brava’s Secret Gem

Tossa de Mar is the kind of Spanish town that makes you go, “Why haven’t I been here sooner?” Golden beaches, medieval walls, secret coves, and seafood that will ruin all other meals for you forever. It’s small enough to wander without a plan but big enough to keep you busy for a whole week.

The Need-to-Know Bit

Flying from the UK to Barcelona or Girona is a breeze – just over two hours, basically a long playlist or a couple of Netflix episodes.

From Barcelona-El Prat, it’s about 1.5 hours by car to Tossa; from Girona-Costa Brava, only 40 minutes. Transfers are easy with taxis, buses, or pre-booked shuttles.

Booking with TUI, On the Beach, or EasyJet is stress-free – flights, hotels, and sometimes transfers bundled together, often cheaper than DIY. Plus, they’re ATOL-protected, so your money is safe while you daydream about beaches.

Tick These Off First

Start in the Vila Vella, Tossa’s old town. Cobblestone streets, pastel houses, and medieval walls make it feel like a movie set. It’s perfect for wandering and photo-snapping without looking like too much of a tourist.

Climb up to the Castell de Tossa, the castle overlooking the town and sea. The views are insane, especially at sunset.

Hit Platja Gran for golden sand, parasols, and buzzing bars, or wander to Cala Pola and Cala Bona for quiet coves and crystal-clear water. Swimming, sunbathing, and reading in peace strongly encouraged.

Take a Boat Tour along the Costa Brava to discover secret coves and hidden beaches. It’s like finding Narnia, but sunnier.

Stroll through the Santa Clotilde Gardens, full of fountains, statues, and cliffside views. It’s peaceful, romantic, and makes you forget all your worries.

Visit the Chapel of Our Lady of Socorro, a tiny slice of history with stunning architecture. A quick stop, but worth the photo.

For something active, hire a kayak or paddleboard and explore hidden coves yourself. Take a snorkel on board to jump off in the best spots.

Hidden Gems

Walk the Camí de Ronda coastal path for secret beaches and unbelievable cliff views. Most tourists miss it, so you can feel like a proper explorer.

Check out the local markets and tapas bars away from the main strip. Carrer Major has little restaurants with the best seafood and zero queues if you know where to look.

Far de Tossa de Mar: Perched on cliffs, this lighthouse gives insane Mediterranean views. Wander nearby trails, spot secret coves, snap photos, or just chill — about 10 minutes’ drive or 30 minutes’ walk from town.

Cap de Tossa: Rugged cliffs and wild trails make this perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring hidden coves – roughly 15 minutes’ drive from Tossa.

Sa Cala: A tiny, magical cove with calm waters and pine forests. Perfect for kayaking, snorkelling, or a quiet escape. About 10–12 minutes’ drive from Tossa de Mar.

Mirador de la Vila Vella: The ultimate viewpoint over Tossa’s old town and sparkling sea. Climb the walls, take in the panorama, and linger for sunset — just 5 minutes’ walk from the town centre.

Museu Municipal de Tossa de Mar: Discover local art, history, and archaeology in a charming historic building. Ideal for a cultural pitstop — located 5 minutes’ walk from central Tossa.

Top Tips

Best time to visit: May to September – sunny, warm, and festival season.

Walk everywhere – the town is tiny, cobbled, and perfect for aimless wandering.

Try local seafood: paella, fresh fish, and Catalan stews.

Bring euros and a small backpack; cobbled streets aren’t for huge suitcases.

English works in tourist spots, but learning “hola” and “gracias” scores points.

Sunglasses, suncream, and a hat are essentials – the Costa Brava sun doesn’t mess around.

Explore early or late for quieter streets and better photos.

Tossa de Mar is the perfect mix of history, beaches, and chill Spanish vibes. Wander the old town, sunbathe on golden sand, paddle in hidden coves and eat seafood like a local. It’s small, stunning, and unforgettable – the kind of place you’ll brag about for years.
