About Krakow:

The heartbeat of Krakow undoubtedly lies within the centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that transports visitors back in time. The magnificent Main Market Square, Rynek Glówny, stands as the largest medieval square in Europe, adorned with the iconic Cloth Hall and St. Mary’s Basilica. Every hour, the trumpet call from the basilica’s tower sounds across the square, a tradition dating back centuries and a poignant reminder of Krakow’s enduring spirit.

Yet amidst the shadows of the past, Krakow radiates a spirit of resilience and renewal. The city’s bustling streets buzz with life, its squares filled with laughter and conversation. Krakow’s culinary scene is incredible, with traditional Polish fare served alongside international cuisine in cosy cafes and beautiful restaurants.

No visit to Krakow would be complete without delving into its tumultuous history. The city bears witness to the horrors of the Holocaust, with the nearby Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp serving as a solemn memorial to the millions who perished under Nazi tyranny. A visit to these haunting grounds is a sobering yet essential experience, a reminder of humanity’s capacity for both unimaginable cruelty and unwavering resilience. Auschwitz & Birkenau on Viator

Auschwitz Trip

I would recommend booking a trip to Auschwitz as a guided tour, this can be done through different excursion sites, although I chose to book this through Viator. You will be picked up from your chosen hotel/meeting point in Krakow and drive 1.5 hours to Auschwitz Memorial. You will be equipped with a headset and begin your tour which lasts for approximately 2 hours, entering through the Arbeit Macht Frei gate. Here you will see the original barracks, gas chambers and learn about the lives of those who were lost as well as seeing their belongings. It is important to be respectful during this time and listen to the guide when stating to not take photos. After this tour, it is time to head to Birkenau which is less than a 5 minute drive to continue delving into the history of Auschwitz for another hour. Here you will see the atrocious living conditions and learn about the people who were held there. Please be prepared to go through security scanners and have comfy shoes as it is a lot of walking!

Trips to Auschwitz and Wielizcka Salt Mine can be done together in one day if rushed for time. Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine on Viator

Zoom through Zakopane’s snow-filled landscapes on a snowmobile and then unwind in rejuvenating thermal springs. A thrilling mix of action and relaxation for any winter lover. Zakopane Snowmobiles & Thermal Baths on Viator.  Or just soak in the scenic Chocholow Thermal Baths on this relaxing escape from Krakow. Surrounded by beautiful mountain views, enjoy natural warm waters perfect for unwinding. Chocholow Thermal Baths on Viator

Practical tips:

Best time to visit- April/May and September/October are great times to visit Krakow with mild temperatures, although it can get a bit chilly at night, however the city is a lot less crowded. The most popular time to visit Krakow is between June and August as the temperature is higher, however the city is busy, ques are long and the prices skyrocket!

Public Transport- Bus and Tram systems are an efficient and cheap way to travel around the city. It is important to buy tickets before boarding at a ticket machine at a bus or tram stop or a kiosk.
